In the Global Soft Power Index 2026, the United Kingdom had the second steepest drop in soft power after the US. Having already declined to 3rd place in 2025, the UK fell to 4th place in 2026, its lowest position in the Index’s history. Its reputation has declined indicating that its relevance is weakening and signalling a loss of its agenda-setting power. Against a backdrop of sustained under-investment in the nation brand and soft power strategy, control over the UK’s image is increasingly slipping away.
